DeAndre Jordan won’t be enough for Mavericks, Shaquille O’Neal says

Clippers center DeAndre Jordan’s name has been at the center of potential trade talks involving the Mavericks but he may not be the answer to turning around Dallas, at least according to Shaquille O’Neal.

He could help them, but I don’t think it’ll get Dallas back to where they used to be very, very prominent, winning championships, O’Neal said Thursday in an interview with 105.3 The Fan’s Shan and RJ show (via SportsDay).

Jordan has spent all 10 of his NBA seasons with the Clippers, averaging 12 points and 15.2 rebounds per game in 2017-18.

Philadelphia badly wants the 27-year-old forward, The New York Times’ Marc Stein said on The Dan Patrick Show this week. Leonard, who could become a free agent after 2018-19, prefers to be traded to the Lakers, according to multiple reports.

The 76ers have discussed potentially dealing Dario Saric and Robert Covington as well as a future first-round pick in exchange for Leonard, according to a report from Sports Illustrated.

San Antonio has also spoken recently with Los Angeles and Boston about a possible trade, according to a report from ESPN.

The Spurs are fully engaged in trade talks with several teams on Kawhi Leonard, including the Lakers and Celtics, league sources tell ESPN. Boston has long had the assets that the Spurs most covet in a potential Leonard trade.

What Frazier thinks about facing Yankees

Here are some pregame notes from the Yankees:

GOT YOUR NUMBER: OF Giancarlo Stanton is a career.409/.480/1.000 (9-for-22) hitter with 1 double, 4HR and 3BB vs. Jacob deGrom, the most HR deGrom has allowed to any batter in his career…is tied for Stanton’s most HR off any pitcher.

Has 21HR in 52G at Citi Field, most by any visiting player…his.613 SLG is highest at the ballpark among all players (min. 100AB)…has 4HR in his last 5G at Citi Field (since 5/6/17) and 9HR over his last 15G (since 4/11/16).

His solo HR on Wed. at Toronto had a 119.3 mph exit velocity, the hardest hit homer in the Majors this season.

Yankees pitchers shut out Toronto in 13 innings on Wednesday, marking only the second time in the last 42 seasons (since 1977) they recorded a shutout in a game that lasted at least 13 innings (also 15 shutout innings on 8/7/09 vs. Boston).

Junior Guerra (R), 38 percent, Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals: Guerra isn’t as good as his 2.89 ERA and 1.16 HIP suggest, but his skills portend a better-than-average pitcher who should be able to get it done versus the Cardinals, a below-average offense versus righties with an above-average strikeout clip in that arrangement.

The antics will be part of an upcoming show on a date to be determined. Later, Colbert was set to sing the national anthem, earnestly not comedically he said.

The past few games have been anything but amusing for the Mets as they have lost six games in a row. Meanwhile, their crosstown rival Yankees have won seven out of their last eight and sit at 40-18 and within a half game of the Boston Red Sox on top of the American League East.

Tonight’s matchup features the Mets’ best pitcher Jacob deGrom facing the Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka. Saturday will see Steven Matz face Domingo German. and Sunday night’s game will now feature Seth Lugo going for the Mets in place of Noah Syndergaard. The Yankees will throw their ace Luis Severino in the 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Jason Kipnis (L), 14 percent, Cleveland Indians vs. Detroit Tigers (RHP Mike Fiers): Yonder Alonso, Lonnie Chisenhall and, recently, Tyler Naquin are the usual suspects when the Indians are highlighted. They’re all in play, but this time, Kipnis gets the spotlight as his bat appears to be coming out of hibernation with hits in four straight, including two homers.

Tight end Tyler Eifert can hardly be relied on after missing all but 10 games the last two years

There is some hope for second-year second-round pick Joe Mixon in the backfield, but he has a lot of work to do after averaging a mere 3.5 yards per rush as a rookie. Mixon’s partner, Giovani Bernard, is a replacement-level veteran.

Richardson was a solid starter in support of top receiver Doug Baldwin, while Graham was one of the most dominant red-zone presences in the league.

And it’s not as though Wilson was considered to be well-supported in the first place. Now, he’ll be relying more heavily on Baldwin (a solid but often unspectacular No. 1 option), Tyler Lockett (high potential but has yet to shine), Brandon Marshall (no longer effective at the age of 34) and Jaron Brown (low catch rate the last three years in Arizona).

That was a really surreal moment for a guy like me, LeBlanc said. That was a wow moment. That was Jeter’s last season and he’s a guy who at that time was kind of bigger than baseball, so to be able to run out in Yankee Stadium and meet up with Derek Jeter and have him slap you on the butt and say, ‘Let’s have some fun’… it was pretty cool.

His run this season has been surreal, as well.

I went to a place where I’m comfortable, LeBlanc said. Comfort is huge. You see so many guys sign big contracts with new teams and they go there and they’re just not the same guy. There’s something about being comfortable in the game of baseball that allows you to go out and be yourself and be OK with being yourself.

Beyond that, there’s some talent with Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins and rookie Antonio Callaway lending support.

At tight end, there’s plenty of hope for the physically marvelous David Njoku and the underrated Darren Fells, while in the backfield they have three enticing options in veteran Carlos Hyde, rookie second-round pick Nick Chubb and impressive pass-catching back Duke Johnson.

Dante Fowler hopes to put good film out there for everybody to see

When the Jaguars announced that they would not exercise their option on defensive end Dante Fowler’s contract for the 2019 season, executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin said the Jags want him to have a great season and earn a new long-term contract.

Given the lack of security beyond this season, Fowler could find himself in a position where he’s soliciting offers from multiple clubs. On Wednesday, the 2015 first-round pick said he knows how good of a player I am and that his plan for the coming season is to make sure every team in the league knows it as well.

So I don’t see any reason why these guys won’t be ready for training camp. It’s a matter of how much we throw at them early in training camp, Gruden said of Williams, Ty Nsekhe, T.J. Clemmings, Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson.

Last week, the offensive line held a cookout, part of an active effort to build camaraderie among a group that can’t succeed without it.

Just hanging out, it’s like different ways, Shell said. Just being around each other, like, whether that’s practice, meeting outside the building. If it’s inside the building, eating breakfast together, eating lunch together. It’s just building that bond. It could be, even in between breaks in the meeting, we [are] just sitting around talking. You know, it’s just things like that that build chemistry, like that makes you trust the person next to you.

Thomas, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player in 2008, is in his ninth season coaching the Chiefs defensive backs.

He began his coaching career with the Cardinals (1981-85) and has coached in Washington (1986-94), Philadelphia (1995-98), Green Bay (1999), Minnesota (2000-01) and Atlanta (2002-09). Thomas was Atlanta’s interim head coach for the final three games of 2007.

He has coached in two Super Bowls.

He’s been ready to work since Day 1, Shell said of Long. You can see he knows his stuff. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s ready to work.

The growing controversy around NFL teams’ treatment of cheerleaders resurfaced Tuesday when a former Cowboys cheerleader sued the franchise for unlawful labor practices.

Erica Wilkins, who was a member of Dallas’ cheerleading squad for three seasons, accused the team of neglecting to pay her for the overtime hours she accrued weekly, according to an NBC 5 report.

Benches empty in Rangers-Dodgers after Matt Kemp runs through Robinson Chirinos

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp’s instincts took over as he ran through a catcher who was blocking his path to home plate Wednesday night. The catcher, Robinson Chirinos of the Rangers, must have been expecting Kemp to just be tagged out.

Notice also in the above video that after Kemp shoved Chirinos hard, Chirinos didn’t want any part of the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger, who looked ready to clean house.

Kemp and Chirinos were ejected for their roles in the fracas.

MLB rules governing plays at home plate allow for contact when the catcher has the ball and is in the way, but it’s likely Kemp would have been called out even if Chirinos had dropped the ball. The rulebook comment on Rule 6.01(i)(1) makes that outcome seem clear. The relevant portion of that comment:

Trump canceled a White House ceremony to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl victory this week after he said the players disagree with their president because he insists that they proudly stand for the national anthem.

According to DallasNews.com, the suspension will cost Irving $685,000.

This marks the second-straight season Irving will miss the first four games due to a suspension. The NFL suspended him last year for violating the league’s PED policy.

It’s been a tough offseason for the 24-year-old defensive tackle. In April, Irving’s ex-girlfriend, Angela Sanchez, accused him of domestic abuse in Frisco, Texas. She later retracted those claims.

He also received sole custody of his 5-year-old daughter this spring.

I ain’t got time to be messing around, getting in trouble like I have been, Irving told DallasNews.com Thursday. I have to make a lot of changes. My whole life basically changed this offseason quickly all at once.

Irving will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2018 season.

Michael Crabtree: I don’t have a choice but to lead Ravens receivers

The Ravens didn’t wait long to find their way out of a deal with Ryan Grant so that they could snap up wide receiver Michael Crabtree after he was released by the Raiders.

They didn’t wait long to install him as the guy in their offense either. Crabtree is the most experienced and accomplished receiver in a Baltimore group that includes fellow newcomers John Brown, Willie Snead, DeVier Posey, Jordan Lasley and Jaleel Scott as well as holdovers Breshad Perriman and Chris Moore.

It’s a group that has to take shape in the coming months, but there’s little doubt that Crabtree will be in the center of it on and off the field.

Voters are clearly torn on the National Anthem issue, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. They seem to be saying, ‘You can still love your country and kneel during its anthem,’ but the NFL’s new ‘must stand’ mandate is fine with them, too. As for teams that defy the new rule, Americans say, ‘Don’t throw a flag on them.’

The Golden State Warriors, up 3-0 in the best of seven 2018 NBA Finals, can eliminate LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers and capture the NBA championship by winning Game 4 on Friday, June 8, 2018 (6/8/18) for a sweep.

Kendricks had a busy week last week, visiting the Browns as well as the Vikings and Raiders. He was released by the Eagles the week before and immediately started drawing interest.

But he said he will not proceed with opening sports betting until he gets the go-ahead from Murphy, whether it’s the signing of the bill or telling the track it’s OK to proceed.

I’m gonna respect his wishes, Drazin said. He got the bill today, he’s gonna review it. I hope he moves expeditiously.

P Diddy tells Big Boy all how the NFL has disappointed him and that he does not want any association after how they treated his brothers. Continue Reading

Steve Young urges T.O. to reconsider his Hall of Fame boycott

Former 49ers receiver Terrell Owens won’t be going to the Hall of Fame for his induction ceremony. Former 49ers quarterback Steve Young wants Owens to reconsider.

The question facing FOX is whether five people can work together seamlessly, or whether the crew will have a too many cooks feel to it. FOX wants Thursday nights to feel like a big deal, and it remains to be seen whether the broadcast team is too big.

Patricia brings the longstanding New England culture of winning to Detroit. For a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 1991 and that has never been to a Super Bowl, that can’t be a bad thing.

Of course, it’s fair to say that, if Patricia is too much of a taskmaster, the players will become alienated if the team continues to struggle. But if the Lions win, Patricia will be celebrated, not castigated.

At least, that’s the opinion of Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who told reporters today that neither his team nor the Golden State Warriors would be used as a prop the way the Eagles were this week.

The irony is that the Eagles have been nothing but fantastic citizens in their own community. I’ve been reading about Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long; these guys are studs, they’re amazing. It will be nice when we can just get back to normal — in three years.

While that part remains to be seen, the Eagles at least have the support of their fellow athletes.

O’Brien said he’s noticed a consistent, daily approach from Watson in his second NFL offseason.

I think you’re out of the college scene and you’re living on your own and you’re earning a paycheck now, O’Brien said. I think it’s more about being on your own and just learning how to have a consistent, daily approach.

At White House ceremony, some visitors knelt during the national anthem

President Trump canceled the Philadelphia Eagles’ White House visit today in his ongoing campaign against the NFL for players kneeling during the national anthem. But his effort to put on a display free of protest did not go according to plan.

But then his company folded, and those concussion stressors were triggered. He spent far more money than the business could handle, he says, right as the economy was tanking, and was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2012. Lewis can still remember the repo man taking everything away. His marriage on the rocks. Everything crumbling down. Depression at its worst.

He even needed to sell a commemorative ’12 Super Bowl ring given to him by the Ravens. That $50,820 helped him get back on his feet—and he didn’t mind the splashy headlines that followed, either, because they warded off the leechesin his life.

And it was right then when Lewis took the advice of the wife of his good friend, ex-back Joe Burns, and attended their church in Atlanta’s Buckhead district. His mind began to clear.

NFL rumors: Mychal Kendricks might’ve requested trade from Eagles before release

Mychal Kendricks spent multiple off-seasons on the Eagles trading block. After the Eagles ‘ first day of OTA practice, they finally parted ways with their long-time linebacker, releasing him, in turn allowing him to explore the free agency market.

The move comes a year after Kendricks actually asked the Eagles to trade him after he received limited playing time in 2016 under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

It seems he might’ve requested a trade again this off-season, too.

Per Cleveland.com, Kendricks indicated he asked againfor a trade this off-season and that the Eagles tried to move him around draft time, to no avail.

Suicidal thoughts began to fade.
